Domingo

Domingo with his best friend

Domingo is a foster kitty that came to the Zoo the end of June, 1999 at about 6 weeks of age. I was fostering kittens for a rescue group in NYC, and Domingo was part of a 4-kitten litter that had been turned into the Center for Animal Care and Control in Manhattan - a truly horrible place where owner turn-ins and strays are usually euthanized after 48 hours. (Some don't even get that long.) I agreed to foster Domingo and his siblings, so a rep from the rescue group went to CACC to pull the litter out. One of the kittens had already been PTS (he sneezed, and was put down because he was "sick"), so the pound substituted Spencer instead. I came home that day with 4 little bundles of black and white joy.

A Very Loud Baby

Spencer was the "big brother" to the other three, grooming them, playing with them, and generally acting like a mother-cat. Domingo, Kiri, and Boomer were wild kittens who shied away at first, but they warmed up very fast. Boomer was ill, and eventually passed away, but Kiri and Domingo thrived and became real little darlings. A note about their names: Kiri is named for a famous soprano since she had such a high-pitched, loud voice. Domingo started out as Domino because of his spots, but the little fellow was constantly vocalizing - the only time he was quiet was when he was asleep or eating - and so, though he doesn't have the lush quality of Placido Domingo, he certainly has the high notes and volume, so I changed his name.

In the middle of July, Spencer and Kiri went in to Petco for adoption. Kiri was adopted right off the bat. Although Spencer made a lot of friends, nobody wanted to take him home. So he came back home with me and stayed until he passed away 12/22/99. Domingo had stayed home that first weekend since he still had goopy eyes and I wanted to make sure he was healthy before going to a new home. The second weekend, lots of people came by and said "Oh! How cute!" and then adopted other kittens or cats. Same thing happened the second weekend I took him in. I figured that he'd been "on display" for 4 days and nobody had adopted him, so maybe he was meant to stay at the Zoo. And since I was moving before the next weekend, I just packed 'Mingo up with the rest of the Zoo and moved him to MI! Penny took an interest in Domingo early on, and he's her favorite buddy. The two of them are never very far apart, and can often be found curled up together napping. Domingo even shares Penny's dinner, both of them eating out of the same dish.
